Plus, going to conferences has always been what academics do, and it's a crucial opportunity for a young scholar to network even if they don't have job interviews there. Why do you think all those people were in Denver at HxA?
I think that young scholars, particularly ones without means, should be financially supported in going to conferences -- I certainly was -- but that's not a reason to get rid of them or to imply that they're a scam.
