As far as I'm concerned the only thing both Whedon and Rowling have done wrong that I'm sure of (since its all questionable accusations by motivated agents anyway) is to subscribe to the woke ideology until their frothing comrades came for them too. Both Whedon and Rowling got what they'd given to others many times. I say this as someone who loves the Whedonverse and thinks HP is incredible. They lived by the sword and "died" by the same.
Could you show me, or tell me, where JK Rowling was woke and has 'given to others many times'? I'm really not sure what you are referring to. She did donate to the Labour Party, but many non-wokes do that. She has set up a women's rape crisis centre, and has a children's charity, she has rescued Afghani women and children. She is a personal hero of mine, but maybe we shouldn't have heroes and if you can show how she's lived by the sword I will change my mind. As for Whedon, I'm a huge Buffy fan and always will be and no matter what Whedon's done, I'll always thank him for giving me the Buffyverse.
Sure, both Whedon and Rowling have invoked “the patriarchy” and made accusations of bigotry against (generally conservatives) those they considered opponents.
I love both of their creative worlds but their personal politics have always been hypocritical and the victim ideology weaponized against them is the same ideology they have weaponized against others.
I have some sympathy for what was done to them but, ideologically speaking, they're reaping what they’ve sown.
So you don't believe there is a patriarchy? I see no hypocrisy in anything JK Rowling has done. She has always stood up for women's rights and has made no secret of being on the left. You sound like a MRA, talking about 'weaponising her victimhood', by which I assume you mean she has spoken out about being abused by her ex-husband and such women need single sex spaces.
No, I don't believe in demonized and inflated ideas of patriarchy, just as I don't believe in the devil or white supremacy as its currently being weaponized. These are all pseudo-religious concepts that are logical fallacies. The existence of disparities are considered themselves evidence of the boogieman being put forward to explain the given article of faith. (i.e. Women are underrepresented in the C-suite which proves that there's a patriarchy intent on oppressing women)
My problem isn't with her position on women's rights, its her demonization of males or "toxic masculinity" or patriarchy, etc. to contextualize her advocacy. When I say that she and Joss weaponize a victim ideology, I'm referring to the critical theory underpinnings of their feminism. Their hypocrisy springs from decrying their treatment at the hands of their detractors who use the same victim ideology to attack Rowling and Joss, that they used to label others as bigots, misogynists (or MRA's as you said). They have been attacked using the same pseudo-religious bullshit that they traffic in.
Whats most funny is if you ask the "toxic males" if they're ok with female only spaces, most of us would be like, "was there ever a question? Who's mad about that?". This whole debate is entirely the fruit of that poisonous victim ideology and I admit there's a certain amount of schadenfreude when these hypocrites are hoisted on their own petard. If that makes me an "MRA", well lol, so be it.
That said, again, I love their art and I agree that women need their own spaces and that Rowling (and probably Joss too) has been treated very unfairly. I just don't think that "the partriarchy" is at fault but that they themselves created a golem which has turned on them.
You do not see any evidence that women have been excluded from society simply for being women? None at all? That women were thought second class? That never happened? That is still not happening, see Afghanistan, see FGM, see surrogacy, see porn, see child brides, see rape. (I have no idea what a C-suite is) I would also add that those attacking JK Rowling are men who wish to be thought of as women, which to me is just another form of patriarchy, and those men are mad that women want single sex space, single sex sports, single sex prisons. They cannot stand the fact that they are being excluded, that women have had the power for one minute to exclude, and that is what is toxic about masculinity. It's no surprise that when women are finally being seen as equal and human, that men find another way to try and subordinate us.
Sure, in the past there has been horrible oppression for all of humanity, including of course, women. And yes, in other places, particularly the middle east, there is currently what could be described as patriarchy, like Iran's women battling for change. But the idea that feminists are so silly as to describe the western world as misogynist or run by the "patriarchy" is just impossibly blinkered. Women have never been better protected or accommodated than now. Women are surpassing men in any number of metrics, education, government participation, income parity, etc.
When you say that men cannot stand the fact, "that women have had power for one minute", verges on caricature. As though men have meetings and organize to keep women down and have sent agents to usurp their power (and bathrooms) or don't see women as human, its just depressing.
These trans people are attacking feminism with it own weapons: a conspiracy theory about universal oppression and hatred, accusations of bigotry and pseudo religious guilt trip using collective complicity to silence their critics.
Traditional masculinity really isn't involved in this debate, this is an internecine leftist battle, a self made disaster that can only be blamed on those using critical theory themselves. And all I'm saying is that as proponents of feminism, Rowling and Whedon are getting a taste of their own ideological medicine.
I assure you, most men aren't really even aware of the trans battle, aren't interested in taking away your bathrooms or sports and definitely see women as humans. It just kills me that this poisonous ideology would have people living their lives thinking that half the population sees them as subhuman, that's the real travesty here.
