Do you live in Russia, Anna? Do you live in Europe? And, as many criticisms as I may have of Russians, I would say they'd be gobsmacked to see a black person, this isn't 14th century, they have TV and the internet just like you.

Molly, I live in Scotland, which is "whiter" than Ireland, and 1992 was thirty years back. I also said the majority of the non-white population is from post 1945 migration in my original comment, it has been an ongoing process.
Well, I live in Europe in a 96% white country, we are not overawed to see non-white people. See, the reason I talked about Europe with a degree of knowledge is because I live in Europe.
I kind of lost track of this conversation and point you are trying to make here, but I did live most of my life in Russia which is 99.97 white (if you consider minor ethnical groups white) and I am telling you that seeing a black person there is very very VERY rare. As kids we were literally pointing fingers and staring
Well, perhaps Russia IS different from the rest of Europe. I made the point that America is not Europe and America is not "the West". That was my original point, and you made some point about systemic racism and your friend.
You might have misunderstood my original reply. My American friend assumes that the only ones who end up in jail are there because of systemic racism therefore Russian jails should be filled with Black-Russians. My argument was, most of it probably has to do with socioeconomic status. But I don't want to elaborate beyond this, tiring
The way it read, or maybe I just assumed, was you were the one talking about systemic racism and your friend said there was an overepresentation of black people in Russian jails because he didn't believe in systemic racism and thought black people were more likely to commit crimes. Anna, I am sorry you're tired but I didn't make you reply.

Of course you are right. It's the same thing seeing something on tv or internet and in person
In 1992 my Irish boyfriend came to Chicago to visit me. He had literally never seen a black person in the flesh before.
Granted, that was a long time ago, but not that long.
